New look. Same result.

The Louisburg boys’ basketball team looks totally different, especially  after losing four of its five starters from a year ago and eight seniors total. But that didn’t stop the Wildcats from feasting on an opponent during their season opener Friday in Louisburg.

After advancing to the sub-state finals a year ago, Louisburg appeared ready to do the same again. The Wildcats took care of business against Prairie View with a 85-51 victory after a big second half.

“Our guys played hard,” Louisburg coach Jim Dillon said. “It was the first varsity experience for a few of our players, and they did well.”

The Wildcats’ lone returning starter, Kyle Nauman, led a balanced scoring attack. Nauman finished with a team-high 14 points and added four rebounds.

Sophomore David Embers finished with 12 points, while senior Marc Rhodes and junior Drew Harding added 11 points a piece. Sophomore guard Kody Cook had a solid game all the way around with nine points, five rebounds and four assists.

With a team filled with juniors, sophomores and a freshman, Dillon was pleased with how his young players performed in the opener.

“I would not say I was surprised by the performance, but you never know what is going to happen with a young team,” he said. “Having said that, we will learn a lot in the next three games.”

Louisburg (1-0) held just a 10-point halftime lead, but the Wildcat defense rose to the occasion and forced several Buffalo turnovers. The offense responded, outscoring Prairie View 48-24 in the second half.

“Our constant pressure eventually got to them,” Dillon said. “I was very happy with the balance on our team, not only scoring, but with all of our stats. It was a good beginning to a very long season, and we will know more by the end of this week.”

The Wildcats will compete in the Bulldog/Wildcat Classic in Baldwin City this week. Louisburg met Burlington on Tuesday, will meet Anderson County for a 4 p.m. tipoff Friday and will play host Baldwin in a 6:30 p.m. tip Saturday.
