It didn’t take long for the Louisburg girls’ basketball team to figure things out in its season opener on Friday against Prairie View.

The Wildcats dominated the game from the opening tip and rolled to a 76-28 rout of the Buffalos in Louisburg. The Wildcats, who return several starters from a season ago, easily looked like the more experienced team.

Louisburg had four players score in double figures and is ready to make a run at a state tournament after falling short the last two seasons.

“We played well, but not great,” Louisburg coach Terry Tinich said. “We still have a lot of things to work on. I think Prairie View is much improved from the past couple of years. We are still trying to find our rotation. We looked at a few different options and will continue to try to find one we like probably through Christmas.”

Junior Taylor Brown led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points, while senior forwards Katelynn O’Hara and Abbey Frazier had their way on the inside, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior guard Lindsay Stacks helped the Wildcats from the outside with 10 points, all of which came in the first quarter.

Prairie View went to a zone defense against Louisburg in hopes of slowing the Wildcats’ high-powered offense down, but it didn’t work too well. Louisburg jumped out to an 25-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 45-14 halftime lead, thanks to their new-look offense.

“We were very balanced offensively and had some good production from girls off the bench,” Tinich said. “It was nice to see a different look defensively. They played a zone most of the night, and we were able to see the great looks the new offense gives us against a zone too.”

Tinich was able to empty his bench in the second half and the 48-point victory gives the Wildcats a great start to the season, but they didn’t have much time to celebrate it.

Louisburg (1-0) took part in the Bulldog/Wildcat Classic on Tuesday in Baldwin City. The Wildcats faced Burlington yesterday, they will meet Anderson County for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff Friday and will play Baldwin at 5 p.m. Saturday.

“I think this week will be a good showing of what we can accomplish this year,” Tinich said. “We have three tough ones this week, and if we don’t come to play and get that killer instinct we’re trying to instill in them, we could be in for a long tournament.”
