Natural gas customers may see a little more change in their pocketbook after paying their next bill.

The Louisburg City Council on Monday night approved lowering natural gas rates, effective Nov. 17.

City Administrator Jeff Cantrell said customers should see a savings on their next natural gas bill.

“We’re still seeing volatility in energy markets, however, they are trending downwards, which allows the city to pass through the savings,” Cantrell said.

The city’s base charge of $18 remains  unchanged, but the charge per British Thermal Unit was reduced.

Customers who use between zero and 999 therms per month, which Cantrell said is the category most residential customers fall into, is reduced from $1.25 to $1.15 per therm; customers who use between 1,000 and 3,999 therms per month will now pay $1.12; and customers who use 4,000 or more therms per month will pay $1.09.

Cantrell said he is unsure how long natural gas rates will stay at lower rates.

“It is difficult at this time to know that long-term pricing effects will be, and like all other utilities, we’re attempting to provide the best pricing.”

Anyone with questions should call the city at 837-5371.
