Project Coordinator Ted Hayden may be a part of Louisburg’s staff for a while longer, after the Louisburg City Council approved an extension of his contract at Monday night’s meeting. City Administrator Jeff Cantrell said the contract continues Hayden’s service with the city through the completion of the Marais des Cygnes Public Utility Authority water treatment facility southwest of Paola next year. Hayden’s current one-year contract as project coordinator expires this month, and the new contract will allow either Hayden or the city to void the contract with 30 days notice. “The contract allows the city to continue our obligations associated with the PUA project,” Cantrell said. “...This is a critical phase of completion at the plant. There are multiple applications that require close intervention.” Cantrell said the new contract significantly reduces the pay structure from Hayden’s previous contract. Earlier this fall, several residents approached the city with grievances regarding Hayden and requested the city not continue his contract, but Cantrell said Hayden’s knowledge is critical in the final phases of the PUA project. “After analyzing the situation further, this is the most affordable way to ensure the quality over the construction of the plant,” Cantrell said. Hayden previously served as Louisburg’s city administrator for more than eight years. He left the position in December 2007 when Cantrell was hired. Hayden was then hired as project coordinator, overseeing several large projects the city had going at the time, including resurfacing 287th Street, the lake shelterhouse, the PUA water plant and several projects involving Kansas Highway 68 in Louisburg. On Monday, Hayden said he was aware the council was considering an offer and planned to do what is best for the city. “I owe Louisburg something. I’ve been here 9 1/2 years,” he said.
