Beginning with this year’s freshmen, Louisburg students will take a full year of world history in their high school curriculum.

At Monday night’s Louisburg USD  416 Board of Education meeting, board members unanimously approved the change to the Louisburg High School social sciences curriculum, which extends the world history class from one semester to a full year, eliminates the geography requirement and rolls the geography curriculum into other courses such as world history and American history.

World history and geography teacher Jim Dillon said the social sciences department has been looking at revamping the curriculum for the last few years, but it wanted to wait to go through another round of state assessments, which happened last year, before making a change.

“We found they test a lot of things we do not teach in world history,” Dillon said. “World history is tested a little more than world geography.”

In other business Monday night:
  • Board members agreed to allow Durham School Services to present the board with a proposal for busing services before entertaining offers from other companies. The district’s contract with Durham ends later this year, and though board members have expressed their happiness with Durham, they also indicated they wanted to see other options.
  • The board also approved appointing board president Jimmy Allen and Paul Kircher to hear an appeal on behalf of the board, of a high school student who has been suspended long term. They will report back to the board their recommendations of the appeal at the January board meeting.
