There’s nothing like a little basketball madness in December to get your blood going for the madness that is March.

The Louisburg boys’ and girls’ basketball teams had their fair share of squeakers this past week, and as it turned out, both were key in the Wildcats’ Bulldog/Wildcat Classic championship.

The girls’ team, which handled Burlington and Baldwin in the first and third games of the tournament, was tested by Anderson County and nearly suffered what would have been the upset of the tournament Friday in Baldwin City. Louisburg breathed a sigh of relief after the 31-30 win, and had it lost that game, they would have seen its title hopes go out the window.

But thanks to the Wildcat defense, and clutch free throw shooting, Louisburg left with its second straight title and has now won four games in a row to start the season.

The boys, on the other hand, had their scare in the first game of the tournament Dec. 9. A 3-pointer at the buzzer from Kody Cook completed a huge comeback against Burlington in the 63-62 win, only to see their title on thin ice after a loss to Anderson County on Friday.

But thanks to a Burlington win over Anderson County on Saturday, the title hopes were still alive for the Wildcats, but they had to defeat Frontier League favorite, and host, Baldwin.

Louisburg used a 15-2 first quarter run to edge the Bulldogs 48-46 and pulled off one of the upsets of the tourney.

The madness has officially arrived for both teams.

Although it is early in the season, the tournament experience is what both teams need to prepare themselves for the substate tournament. It is never too early to get tested. In fact, most coaches want that early on to see where their team is at.

All signs point to the girls’ team to be on course with either Paola or Ottawa for the substate title late in February, and hopefully, their first state berth in a long time.

Although the boys’ team isn’t as rock solid as the girls, it still has plenty to build on. It has a nice mix of senior leadership and young talent.

The question is, will it all click late in the season?

If Saturday had anything to say about it, then the Wildcats are on the right track. That win could go a long way for the Louisburg boys this season and we could all look back on the Dec. 13 game as the game that started something special.
