The Louisburg seventh-grade girls’ middle school basketball team had an edge hosting the Frontier League basketball tournament Saturday. The Wildcats took full advantage of their opportunities. After the No. 3 seed Louisburg squad dominated Spring Hill 34-17 in first round action Thursday, the Wildcats returned home for their final two games and they made it count. Louisburg defeated rival No. 2 Paola 29-23 in the semifinals before squaring off with upset-minded Baldwin, a No. 4 seed. Baldwin, who upset No. 1 seed Pioneer Ridge in the semis, had thoughts with another upset of Louisburg, but the Wildcats responded with a 24-17 to take the league crown. “I have always told our girls that they will get what efforts they put in,” head coach Ryan Scott said. “I believe our strong teamwork and positive attitude is what helped us be successful during the Frontier League Tournament.” Baldwin defeated Pioneer Ridge on a buzzer beater to get to the title game and the Wildcat coach knew his team would face a potent offense. They tried a 3-2 zone, but it got them into foul trouble, so he went to a box-and-1 and slowed down the Bulldog offense. “Going into the fourth quarter with a lead, I told the girls to get prepared for eighth grade season and learn how to play a close game with a lead,” Scott said. “We set a goal for them which was to control the game by slowing down our pace of play and take control of the clock.” Members of the title team are Kylee Cauthon, Marisa Perry, Shelby Whiting, Kacie Geiman, Brecken Sigg, Maddie Majeski, Ellie Walter, Nicole Hopkins, Emma Vogel, Savannah Mitchell, LeeAnna Schmidt and Maddie DeShazer.
