Holding doors, listening, cleaning the house and treating others nicely are just a few ways Rockville Elementary School students show respect.
As part of the school’s Character Counts program, students spent the last few weeks focusing on how they can show respect at school and at home. “We talked about different things: solving conflicts peacefully, good manners, being considerate, respecting differences,” said school social worker Sara McIntire. “When we wrapped up, I wanted to figure out how they could really apply it.”
Kindergartners and first-graders created a wall of respect, drawing pictures to illustrate how they would show respect. Second-graders participated in a story contest, writing a short essay on how they would show respect. After each student wrote their essay, the essays were taken to Broadmoor Elementary School, where fourth-graders in Krista Wilson’s and Allison Miller’s classes judged the essays and chose the top two in each class.
Last week, the winning second-graders were honored with a short assembly and read their essays to their classmates.
“It’s fun to see what they learned,” McIntire said. “A lot were able to think about how showing respect applies in the classroom.
“The reason we’re doing it is to teach the kids things and help them decide what kind of kid they’re going to be. It’s pretty powerful that they can make that choice.” Following are the winning essays from each class.
