Through a partnership with Rockville Elementary School, members of the Louisburg American Legion Auxiliary John P. Hand Unit No. 250 this year built on their tradition of helping veterans at Christmastime.

Every year, the ladies of the auxiliary purchase and donate gifts on behalf of the Christmas Gift Shop, which is held in the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth. The shop allows veterans who do not have resources to purchase gifts for their families to choose gifts at no charge. Auxiliary women throughout eastern Kansas assist with shopping, picking out cards and shipping the gifts to family members.

This year, Unit No. 250 member Rhonda Kerr realized something was missing from the gift shop — a gift for the veterans. She and the other members of the Louisburg Auxiliary came up with a plan to ensure each veteran received a small gift.

The team reached out to RES students, and with the assistance of Principal Becky Bowes, students at the school designed small gift bags. More than 400 pairs of new socks were purchased and put in the bags, with each carrying the message, “Footnotes to a Soldier — Thank you for gift of service”.
