$1.54 doesn’t sound like much.

But when you toss that change in a little red bucket with $10,000.24, it adds up to another record-breaking year for the Louisburg Lions Club.

The Lions Club has been ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at a record-setting pace every holiday season since the club took over the fund-raising effort in 2000. Although bell ringers edged last year’s mark by a slim $1.54, the club was pleased with this year’s $10,001.78 effort in the face of economic adversity.

Eighty bell ringers tallied a total 283 hours this season in front of Louisburg Price Chopper on Amity Street — 40 more hours than in 2007. Lions members logged the most hours, followed by Peoples Bank’s 26 hours and First Option Bank’s 16 hours. Rockville Elementary School teachers, organized by Principal Becky Bowes, clocked 12 hours. The Louisburg High School Leo Club also rang the bell for a dozen hours, and First National Bank pitched in six hours.

“There were lots more individual ringers who just called and offered to help, for which I was very grateful,” Lions Club organizer Sylvia Bostick said.

With seven ringing days to go before Christmas, Bostick feared the club would fall short of its goal.

“We will have to average $445 per day to surpass last year,” she said earlier. “But miracles do happen. We just have to believe.”

Riding a wave of generous donations that crested Christmas Eve, the miracle did come true.

“I want to thank each and every person who donated their time to ring, and to each person that put money in the red bucket, many of which donated almost every time they came to the store,” Bostick said.
The funds will be used to help local residents in need.

“I would like to give a special thanks to Price Chopper for allowing us to ring,” Bostick said. “As I said before, Louisburg is a great place to live.”
