In 2008, the city of Louisburg committed a significant amount to resurfacing streets in the older part of town, in response to residents voicing their concerns for many years.

Louisburg City Council members approved in the 2008 budget for $700,000 to be used to repair the streets in the worst condition — some by chip-and-seal method and others with an asphalt overlay.

High-traffic roads, such as Rogers Road and Simms, Doyle, Mulberry, South Third and South Fifth streets, were identified and given the asphalt overlay.

Most repairs were completed over the summer, but near the completion of the street repair project, high asphalt costs and then rising oil prices kept Public Works Director Rita Cassida on alert, monitoring the changes in prices daily.

More street improvements for the northern part of Louisburg were planned for 2009, but City Administrator Jeff Cantrell said those plans may need to be reevaluated in light of the recent economic downturn and the city tightening its 2009 budget to keep the mill levy steady.
