Fans and supporters came out by the hundreds to christen the new Wildcat Stadium just east of Broadmoor Elementary School on Sept. 12, as the Louisburg High School Wildcat football team played their first home game of the season in front of a large crowd spread out in the new stadium.

As part of the bond issue passed by Louisburg USD 416 voters, renovations to Wildcat Stadium called for a new stadium building with a press box, larger concession facilities, ticket sales area and larger women’s bathroom; the addition of 1,000 extra seats on the home side of the field; a resurfaced track; and 100 more parking spaces located southwest of the field.

USD 417 Board of Education members hired architects Hollis & Miller to design the renovated stadium and JE Dunn to manage the construction, which was started soon after school ended in May and completed the afternoon of the first home game.

The board put off some of the construction one year, hoping that if they bid the entire project as one package, the costs associated with the project wouldn’t be as high. But the economy didn’t want to cooperate in 2008.

Final construction costs put the stadium about $600,000 over budget, but those costs were offset by interest, allowing the district to complete the promised project this year.

On Sept. 26, just before the Wildcats’ home game against Gardner-Edgerton High School, 97.5 The Vibe radio station and members of the Kansas City Brigade football team traveled to Louisburg to help the community celebrate its new facility.

This spring, the LHS and LMS track and field teams will get to experience the new facility, breaking in the newly resurfaced track.
