Homer Shineman, 90, Paola, died Dec. 28, 2008, at Kansas City Hospice House.
 
He was born Feb. 21, 1918, in Bent County, Colo., to Garland and Ellen Owen Shineman. He graduated from high school in Frankfort, Kan., in 1936. In 1944, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1946 after his European tour.

He married Hilda Lorine Flake on April 19, 1941, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Block. They moved to Paola in 1946, where he opened a tire repair service and later that year purchased a gas station and renamed it Shineman Automotive Service Station, which he operated for 34 years before he retired in 1980.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the oldest member of the Paola V.F.W., and the Paola American Legion.

His hobbies were traveling, fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards and working with his hands in woodworking. He never met a stranger and was always very accommodating.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Hilda, and a sister, Mary Jo Coats.

Survivors are his children, Jerry Shineman of Granbury, Texas, Bonnie Morris of Kansas City, Mo., and Gloria Garrett of Overland Park; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marguerite Forst of Tecumseh, Kan. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Paola Chapel, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071, (913) 294-2372. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, 401 E. Piankishaw St., Paola. Burial will follow at Paola Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church endowment fund.
