The Louisburg golf team had its ups and downs during the 2008 season, but the Wildcats finished the year on a major upswing.

The odds were stacked against the Louisburg golf team during the May 12 Class 4A regional tournament in Ottawa.

Whether it was Mother Nature’s howling winds or the fast greens, a full Wildcat team was challenged by the Ottawa Country Club course. Plus, the Wildcats were missing a key part of their team in Jake Fenske, so the room for error became a lot smaller for Louisburg.

The Wildcats responded with flying colors.

Louisburg shot a 332, finished second overall and qualified the five-member team for the state tournament in Manhattan. Paola won the regional with a 316, but for the first time in a long time, the Wildcats sent the entire squad to state. Louisburg finished 10 strokes ahead of third place Ottawa.

“We knew it was going to be tough without Fenske,” senior Dustin DeLand said. “Playing with only five guys meant we all had to shoot good scores if we wanted to qualify, and we did. I think everyone was really excited when we found out.”

DeLand and teammate Patrick Dixon picked up medals to add to the already exciting day. DeLand and Dixon each shot an 81 to lead the team and had to go on a playoff with Paola’s Mike Bryson to determine placing.

DeLand finished the playoff hole in seventh, and Dixon took ninth. DeLand would have had a lower finish had he not birdied his final hole of the day.

Dixon shot a 44 on the front nine, but responded with a solid 37 on the back. DeLand did almost the exact opposite.

DeLand shot a 39 on the front nine with the rest of the No. 1 golfers but shot a 42 on the back.

“The scores were definitely very high,” DeLand said. “I think a lot of guys were struggling because the greens were really fast and the winds were blowing up to 30 miles per hour at times. I mean, we ended up losing by 16 strokes to Paola, but that doesn’t matter. We qualified, and that is what is important.”

Teammate Andrew Barker finished one stroke out of a medal with an 11th place 83, and freshman Luke Fenske shot an 87 and finished in a tie for 14th. Matt Brant shot a 99 to round out the team scores.

The state tournament, however, wasn’t quite as memorable. The Wildcats failed to garner a medal, and Dixon was the top finisher on the team with an 83.
