The discus ring was kind to Jeff Woods in 2008.

Woods completed his senior campaign with a second-place finish at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships in Wichita, but maybe more importantly, he got a little closure in the process.

During the April 21 home meet, Woods broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 168 feet, 4 inches — a goal he had been striving for during his four-year high school career.

But it was who held the old record that left Woods with some mixed emotions. His late older brother, J.D. Woods, previously set the record but was killed in an automobile accident in 1999.

Jeff broke the record on his final try of the competition, and even he wasn’t sure at the time if he had enough on his throw.

“I really didn’t know if I had broke the record or not,” Jeff said. “I knew I had a pretty good throw, and I was just waiting to see what the measurement was. I really don’t know how to feel.”

Woods broke the record in front of his parents and many classmates, all of whom were there to give him a big hug after it was over.

Woods wasn’t the only success story on the track for the Wildcats. The 4x400-meter relay team won the silver medal at the state meet.

R.J. Saunders, Doug Bailey, Colby Kueser and Jason Sattler knew they would each have to run the leg of their lives if they wanted to have a chance to compete for a gold in the 4x400-meter relay.

It turns out, the Louisburg quartet did just that.

Even though the Wildcat relay team finished about a second short of gold, they still had nice position on the medal stand. Louisburg took second in 3 minutes, 26.42 seconds, a personal best, after edging Paola at the finish line.

Leave it to a sophomore to send seniors Bailey and Kueser out on a good note. Sattler ran the anchor leg of the relay and sat in third place down the last 100 meters.

Sattler turned it on down the stretch and caught up with Paola’s Antonio Smith at the finish line. Sattler just nipped Smith at the end and beat Paola by 0.18 seconds. Baldwin won the event in 3:25.52.

“This was a great way to send those two seniors out,” Sattler said. “I ran pretty strong. It seemed like I hit a wall around on the 200-meter mark, but I just kept running. It felt really good when I crossed the finish.”
