Co-workers and county officials will soon bid farewell to Kathy Peckman as master county clerk, but she will still be serving county residents on a volunteer basis.  “After I retire, I’ll still be working for the county — not for pay — trying to get cemetery records online,” she said. “I’ll be digitizing, mapping, (cataloging) who’s buried where, adding pictures of the tombstones and scanning obituaries.”Peckman first began her career with the county in January 1993. “Before that, I was a telecom analyst for J.C. Penney,” she said, adding that when she first took office, she had no experience in county government. Having grown into the job, she has repeatedly won re-election and, in December 2007, Peckman received national recognition for her work on county and state elections. At that time, Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh awarded her a National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion, commending her for her record of service with numerous committees and for keeping Miami County government “responsive, up to date and inclusive.” Co-workers in the county administrative offices have planned a retirement party for Peckman to take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Commission Chambers, Miami County Administration Building, 201 S. Pearl St. in Paola. The occasion will have a “pool party” theme. According to the invitation, anyone who would like to write up a note or a remembrance may submit it to the county offices for inclusion in a collection to be presented to Peckman.
