The Miami County Commission showed its support Wednesday for a current effort to keep the Osawatomie Correctional Facility — marked for possible closing — in operation.

Economic Development Director Janet McRae submitted and received approval for a request that the commission authorize Chairman Jim Wise to sign a letter asking Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to intercede with the Kansas Department of Corrections to allow continuation of operations at the Osawatomie facility.

McRae said closure would mean the relocation of 40 jobs out of Osawatomie. She also said inmates provided nearly $300,000 worth of labor during the 2008 fiscal year to Hillsdale Lake, Osawatomie State Hospital and the communities of Paola and Osawatomie.

The letter mentions these facts, along with a finding by the Kansas Legislative Research Department that the per-inmate cost of housing at Osawatomie is the second lowest of all state facilities. It also includes a statement that the facility’s nearly $1 million budget is “a huge lift for a community that has one of the highest levels of poverty as ranked by low-to-moderate income guidelines.”

In other business, the commission approved the following:
  • Submission of a letter of support for the Paola Senior Center’s application for state operating assistance under the Federal Transit Administration Act of 1991.
  • Dedications for the final plat of Horse Creek division, dividing about 106.7 acres into four lots ranging from 6.67 acres to 80.03 acres in an area located about a quarter mile east of Harmony Road and a quarter mile north of 343rd Street.
  • Accounting encumbrances for Fiscal Year 2008. These include $1,679,513.16 in encumbrances not previously approved, cash transfers of $4,246,730 for transportation projects and $489,531 in other cash transfers, and payroll accrual entries showing $322,024.48 in salaries and benefits payable for the period starting Dec. 20 and ending Dec. 31, 2008.
