Louisburg City Council members took Monday night to honor a community leader who went above and beyond what was expected of him as a citizen.

The council, at the direction of Mayor Arlen Thompson, unanimously approved dedicating the park at City Lake in honor of Ron Weers, who died in December.

The park has been renamed Ron Weers Park.

“From the day after I moved to town 19 years ago, I heard the name Ron Weers mentioned,” Thompson said. “We needed to do something, and Ron’s untimely death struck a chord in me.”

Weers’ contributions to the community included serving as a consultant on city construction projects, anonymously donating to projects in the community and families in need, and most recently being given the Chamber of Commerce’s Appreciation Award in November.

In other business Monday night, council members:
  •     Scheduled a work session for 6:30 p.m. March 9 to discuss upcoming projects, long-term and short-term goals for the city, as suggested by council member Sid Mitchell.
  •     Approved an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation for the Kansas Highway 68 and Sutherland Drive project, which includes a north-south street located east of First National Bank and an east-west street located south of the bank.
