Romance, surprise and the ambiance of proposing on Christmas Eve. Rick and Scott Woolsey had it all figured out. Everything, that is, except for the fact that both brothers had the same idea. Jeanne Woolsey, the mother of the soon-to-be-grooms, saw the coincidence coming. She knew Rick, a traditionalist at heart, had already asked the parents of his now fiancé, Samantha, for permission to marry her. She also knew that Scott planned to propose to his now fiancée, Kelli, because Jeanne helped her son wrap the ring in a series of different-sized boxes. Not wanting to affect either of their plans, Jeanne decided it would be best for both brothers to find out about the other’s proposal afterward. So when Christmas Eve arrived, the brothers executed their plans to perfection. At his Paola home, Rick played Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen,” and danced with Samantha, before getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him. The day was particularly special because it was their dating anniversary. Little did he know that over in Louisburg, his brother Scott was preparing to give Kelli her own Christmas gift of a lifetime. It took quite a while for Kelli to get through all the wrapped boxes, but her prize at the end was a sparkling ring, along with a Willow Tree figurine featuring two adults and two children. Kelli has two children from a previous relationship. It wasn’t until the next day, when both couples showed up at Jeanne and her husband, Steve’s, rural Paola home for a Christmas dinner, that they found out about the coincidence. Rick’s reaction was a smile and quick jab at his brother. “Copy cat,” he said. Scott took the ribbing in stride, even if by his recollection, he had already proposed by the time his brother got down on one knee. Jeanne said Scott had always been the laid back one, and Rick had always been the competitive one. Both brothers have an older brother, David, and with Rick being the youngest, he had an uphill battle to stay on the same level as his two siblings. Things became a lot tougher for Rick after he was nearly killed in a motorcycle accident near Paola in 2003. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and still deals with memory problems. Rick just moved out of his parent’s house over Labor Day weekend, five years after his accident, and Jeanne said she’s ecstatic he’s found someone like Samantha, who can help him with his daily strategies to remember things. Rick and Samantha had known each other for many years, and both are Paola High School graduates, but they had only been dating for about a year and a half before the proposal. Scott and Kelli, on the other hand, had only been dating since this past summer, when the couple met at the Louisburg Athletic Club, where Scott is a personal trainer. When both recently-engaged couples arrived at about the same time for Christmas dinner, Jeanne said there was a bit of an awkward moment in the kitchen off the entrance as the couples began to realize what was going on. “I was nervous because I didn’t know how the girls would respond,” Jeanne said. “The guys cracked up. They saw the humor immediately.” The girls followed in stride, as both began gushing over each other’s rings, Jeanne said. There wasn’t even an issue when both couples expressed interest in a May wedding date, as Scott and Kelli have targeted May 2009 and Rick and Samantha are looking at May 2010, so Samantha can finish her schooling to be a medical technician. With all joking aside, Scott said he is very proud of what his little brother has accomplished. “It’s a big step for him,” Scott said. “I’m glad, and I hope for the best.” He wasn’t even phased by Rick’s “copy cat” remark. “That’s just him,” Scott said with a laugh.
