On Sunday evening, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami County Bowl for Kids’ Sake 2009 team captains and interested participants met for kick-off party. The bowling tournament helps BBBS raise one-third of their budget, said Erin Lyon, BBBS director. “We set a goal of $50,000,” she said. This year’s Bowl for Kids’ Sake will have a 1950s theme, said Tonia Johnson, BBBS case aide. “Girls pull on those poodle skirts and don those saddle shoes. Guys pull out those old leather jackets and rolled jeans, and let’s rock. You thought 2008 was fun, well 2009 is gonna really rock,” she said. Lyon said BBBS needs more volunteers to help form teams for the biggest fund-raiser of the year. “Our Bowl for Kids Sake takes place on March 7 at Olathe East Lanes. Teams are forming now, so get four friends and contact us. Better yet, talk to the team captains we have so far or to Tonia or myself for information,” Lyon said. “So far, we have teams from First Option Bank, TeamBank, Paola teachers, BBBS Bigs, BBBS board members, and we expect to see many more teams forming soon,” Lyon said. Lyon emphasized how this tournament is not about the bowling. “That’s just the fun part. The important part is to raise funds for children in Miami County. Our budget really does depend on this. It will be a challenge with the poor economy this year,” she said. Big Sister Sue Feighner said team members really do not need to know how to bowl. “I had the lowest score on our team last year, and my Little laughed at me, but it was all for fun,” she said. In the county, the waiting list for matches stands at 16. “We have made 62 matches in the past two years from a low of 15. Hopefully, we can push this to 100 this year. What most people don’t understand is that it takes about $1,000 to keep a match made. Monitoring matches takes time and money. “But even in the worst of times, especially in those times, children still need this kind of support,” Lyon said. Last year, 37 teams from Miami County participated in the fund-raiser and saw a 97 percent return on pledges. When forming teams, BBBS asks each team member to raise $100 and encourages them to go beyond that number. This can be done by seeking pledges, said Big Sister Linda Dalton. “Pledges can be for as low as $5 or $10 or higher, of course. People should not feel hurried or pressured. Their donation is also tax deductible, and we will provide receipts,” Dalton said. BBBS will be generous with prizes, Lyon said. Teams that raise $1,500 or more get their name in a drawing for “Fork and a Movie.” “We will rent out the whole theater, which seats 32, so it would be more than the five team members getting to go there,” Lyon said. Individuals who raise $500 will be placed in a drawing for a DVD home theater system. Anyone who raises $250 will be placed in a drawing for a 15-inch LCD/DVD television. The team with the best 1950s look will receive a $50 gift certificate to El Tapatio restaurant. Each team member that raises their minimum personal goal of $100 will receive a Bowl for Kids’ Sake shirt. For more information, call (913) 294-4403 or visit www.ksbbbs.org/mi. All proceeds benefit Miami County BBBS.
