William Donald Rooney, 78, Bucyrus, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. “Don,” as he was known, was born Oct. 20, 1930, in Cameron, Mo., the son of William Cletus and Mary Angela O’Connor Rooney. He graduated in 1948 from Cameron High School.  He married Marie Joan Schmid on June 1, 1957, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Rooney attended the night division at Rockhurst College and graduated in 1965 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. From 1967 until his death, he practiced as a self-employed certified public accountant. In 1976, the family moved to Bucyrus, and he added farming to his life pursuits. From that time on, he was a member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Wea. His vision for the parish to have a grade school was realized in 2000. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in the Fourth Degree and served as financial secretary for Holy Rosary Council 12546. He loved his family and enjoyed his accounting practice, his clients, farming and his work with the church and the Knights of Columbus. Those preceding him death included three sisters, Josephine, Mary Lou and Sharon; two brothers, J.C. and Tom; and a daughter, Mary Rose, who died in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Marie Rooney, and four sons, John C. Rooney of Shelby, Neb., Donald J. Rooney of Fredericksburg, Va., Robert G. Rooney of Overland Park and Joseph M. Rooney of Leawood; and three grandchildren. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at the church, followed by burial in Queen of the Holy Rosary Cemetery. Arrangements are being cared for by Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home of Louisburg. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given for Masses and as a memorial to Queen of the Holy Rosary School, in care of the funeral home, 120 S. Broadway St., Louisburg, KS 66053.
