James Burton Walters Jr., 91, Rockville, Ind., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind. 

He was born April 17, 1917, in Commerce, Okla., the oldest of the five children of James Burton Walters Sr. and Lela Ferguson Walters. He attended schools in Commerce, Lane and Paola and was a 1935 graduate of Paola High School.

On Oct. 6, 1936, he married Helen Lucille Wiseman in Paola. She died in June 1969. He married Florence Clark on May 25, 1972.

Mr. Walters was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving the World War II victory medal.

He retired from the Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co. in Montezuma, Ind., after more than 40 years of service. After retirement, he purchased a home in Florida in addition to his home in Indiana. They spent the winter months in Florida and the summer months in Rockville.

He enjoyed traveling, working around his home and on his lawn and doing a few craft projects.

Others preceding him in death were three brothers, Carl, Don and Johnny Walters; a son, Robert Eugene Walters; and a grandson.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Florence Clark, of the home; two daughters, Linda Dohrman of Mountain Home, Ark., and Deanna Sue Wilson of North Pointe, Fla.; two stepsons, Bob Clark and Dane Clark, both of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Peggy Jenkins of Arizona.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Miami Memorial Gardens in Paola. Pallbearers will be Jim Dohrman, Mark Dohrman, Casey Walters, Jim Vasquez, James Aaron Vasquez and Lake Vasquez.

Arrangements in Rockville were cared for by Gooch’s Funeral Home, and in Paola by Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home.

The family requests donations be made to USD 368, P.O. Box 268, Paola, KS 66071, in honor of J.B. Walters. 1935 graduate, to the Kirk E. Wilson Science Scholarship Fund.
