An old-fashioned barber shop. That’s how Tim Gifford describes his business, Skeeter’s Barber Shop, in the lower level of 602 W. Amity St. With combs nestled in a jar, race car memorabilia on the walls and two chairs for customers, Skeeters offers traditional barber services for Gifford’s Louisburg clients. “My dad’s a barber,” Gifford said, describing how he got into the business. Gifford said he was going to go to college to be a teacher and a coach, but a construction accident stalled those plans. “Dad said go to barber college, and that way I always got something to fall back on.” Gifford first owned a shop in Overland Park, then came to work for Louisburg Barber Shop for the last three years. But when the tough economy hit and Louisburg Barber Shop couldn’t support two barbers, Gifford decided to open his own business, Skeeter’s Barber Shop, on Nov. 25. “We’re doing real good,” Gifford said. “We get a little busier every week ... Saturdays are great because you get to talk to everybody about high school football and basketball games. If I worked up in the city, I couldn’t do that.” The name Skeeter’s Barber Shop has just as much of a story as the pictures and knickknacks inside the business. “It was my nickname in high school,” Gifford said. “I grew up working on farms and around horses, and the ‘skeeters’ loved to eat me.” Gifford lives in Louisburg with his wife, Jan. They have two children, Debbi and Toby, who are both Louisburg High School graduates. Skeeter’s is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday.
