Families with teenagers who plan to take driver’s education through Louisburg USD 416 this summer will pay a higher rate after a decision by the district’s board of education Monday night.

Board members voted 6-1, with Jim Vallacqua casting the dissenting vote, to raise the driver’s education fee to $200 from $160.

The increase is necessary, Superintendent Rick Doll said, because the amount of money in state reimbursement the district for the program declined between $4,000 and $5,000 from last year.

“We have also felt driver’s ed should be self-supporting,” Doll said.

Comparatively, Louisburg’s rates were slightly lower than other Frontier League schools, Doll said. Other schools charge between $160 and $250.

The cost increase will not cover all of the district’s expenses in running the summertime program, but an excess in the program’s fund allowed board members to raise the cost only about half as much as needed.

In other business at Monday night’s meeting:
B.J. Garcia, regional vice president of Durham School Services, the district’s busing provider, made a brief presentation and proposal for Louisburg to renew its contract, which expires at the end of the year.

The proposal includes a 1 percent drop in cost the first year with a 3 percent increase each year after for a total of five years. It would also have the district retain buses that are no more than 12 years old.

Previously, board members expressed displeasure with the age of Louisburg’s buses.

Because of the positive relationship with Durham, board members directed Doll to continue having conversations with the company to see if an agreement on services can be reached before the board’s February meeting.

If the district and Durham cannot work the details out, Doll said he would put together a request for proposals for other companies to potentially service the district.
