Louisburg USD 416 Board of Education’s move Monday night to increase driver’s education fees from $160 to $200 is one example of how reductions in state funding will not only affect Louisburg USD 416 but school districts across the state.

The state’s reimbursement to the district for the driver’s education program declined between $4,000 and $5,000 from last school year.

Louisburg’s rates were lower than other Frontier League schools, so an increase probably was needed.

With state funding for public education in jeopardy this year, educators likely will be faced with some hard decisions about what fees to raise, what programs to cut.

Hopefully, it will not reach such dire consequences that districts across Kansas will have to eliminate staffing positions as well.

Some school districts in the state, including Louisburg, already have indicated that staffing cuts may be necessary.

District patrons will have to be patient while school administrators and their staffs work through potential budget pitfalls that lie ahead.

Providing adequate funding for public education should be one of the state Legislature’s top priorities this year.

Our local lawmakers are friends of education and understand the needs, but they, too, are facing some difficult decisions ahead.

Lawmakers and school administrators need our support, our prayers and our patience as we move forward in 2009.
