A former employee of Miami County Emergency Medical Services has pleaded guilty to stealing morphine. Benjamin B. Ritchie, 27, pleaded guilty last week to one count of possession of morphine and one count of theft. Ritchie originally was charged with 11 counts of possession of morphine and 11 counts of theft, but the remaining counts were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Sentencing is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 5. Ritchie was hired last August as a battalion chief and was terminated Oct. 16. A new battalion chief has since been hired. The investigation into the morphine theft began in October, after the Miami County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by EMS officials.
