It’s not often a sixth-grader beats an eighth-grader in a school competition, but sixth-grader Tanner Myers did just that in the Louisburg Middle School geography bee last week. Tanner beat eighth-grader Grace Rehorn and 28 others — 10 students from each grade competed — for the title of geography bee winner. He then took a 70-question geography test, which will be sent to the state to determine whether he qualified to compete in the state competition, Principal Brian Biermann said. Grace said she was happy with coming in second place. “It was shocking because I had no idea I would make it past the first round,” she said. Biermann said first-round questions were easier, giving contestants multiple answers to choose from. But as the number of students still in the competition dwindled, questions became increasingly more difficult. The question Tanner answered correctly to win the bee was, “The Pampas, temperate grasslands often used for grazing cattle, are located on what continent?” The answer is South America. Tanner can’t remember exactly how he came up with the right answer, but both be and Grace agree that an interest in social studies helped them succeed. “I always wanted to travel around the world when I was older, and I always liked to look at maps,” Tanner said. Grace said she has similar interests. “I really like history class, so when Mr. (Jeremy) Holloway asked me if I wanted to do it, I did because I like social studies,” she said. Biermann said Tanner and geography bee organizer Rochelle Peters are still awaiting the results of the test to see if Tanner qualified.
