The three-year terms of Miami County Planning Commissioners John Murphy, Randy Kitchen and Hannes Poetter expire this month, providing an opportunity for interested county residents to apply for those positions. The position of Planning Commissioner John Nichols is also open — although his term would not otherwise expire in 2009 — because he vacated his seat. Seats on the nine-member planning commission are appointed by members of the Miami County Commission, to which the planning commission is an advisory body. During the Wednesday county commission meeting, Commissioner George Pretz received a unanimous vote of approval for his appointment of county resident Bill Elliott to the planning commission. All planning commissioners serve at-large, which means every seat represents the entire county, rather than having a designated district. The planning commission meets at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month in the commission chambers on the first floor of the Miami County Administration Building, 201 S. Pearl St., Paola. Any county resident who is interested in serving as a member of the Miami County Planning Commission may contact his or her Miami County commissioner by telephone at (913) 294-5844 or by fax at (913) 294-9163 to apply for consideration of appointment.
