When Miami County Sheriff’s deputies aren’t responding to traffic accidents, taking offense reports or booking people into jail, they’re patrolling the streets and responding to the variety of calls that dispatchers receive everyday. Many of these tasks are recorded using general purpose reports. The following is a listing of some recent reports. At 7:06 p.m. on Jan. 13, a deputy was dispatched to 39335 Lone Star Road after a resident called and said there was a black cow in her yard. Upon arrival, the deputy saw a black heifer weighing about 500 pounds and wearing a yellow ear tag. The deputy could not track down the owner, and he cleared the scene after the cow wandered back further into the yard, according to a Miami County Sheriff’s Office report. At 3:15 p.m. Jan. 14, a deputy was dispatched to 28249 Crescent Hill Road in response to a fire in a barn. Upon arrival, the deputy discovered that the Paola Volunteer Fire Department was already on the scene and had put out the fire, which accidentally started in a Bobcat tractor, according to a sheriff’s office report. At 2:52 a.m. Jan. 18, a deputy was dispatched to an area near 343rd Street and Victory Road after a resident called and said he heard a loud noise east of his home. The resident said the noise sounded like metal banging. The deputy checked the area but was unable to locate the source of any noise, according to a sheriff’s office report. At 8:30 a.m. Jan. 18, a deputy was dispatched to 26870 W. 319th St. after a caller reported there was a cow in the yard. The deputy found the cow in the back yard and discovered that it belonged at the sale barn. The cow was placed in a small pasture before being picked up. At 11:17 a.m. Jan. 18, a deputy was dispatched to an area near 319th Street and Rockville Road to take a damaged property report from a resident who was retrieving mailboxes from a frozen pond. The damaged mailboxes were collected as found property.
