Considering a last-minute change in coaches this year, the Louisburg High School debate team fared well in the state competition held over the weekend at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka. The team of Jenna Eggleston and Gwen Baumgardner took fifth in octafinals, placing them in the top 16 teams in Class 4A in the state. “I was pleased,” coach Tam Osgood said. “The kids did very well considering the fact that they were working for a brand new coach and all the things they had to go through to get to this.” Osgood said fifth was the highest one of LHS’ teams placed, but the fact that all of the school’s varsity teams made it to state speaks wonders for Louisburg’s program. Other debaters competing at the state competition were Kayleigh Kohlenberg and Derek Symes, Emily Tyson and Stephen McTeer and Matt Locke and Mark Sitek. “Our other teams did well, but they were younger kids, and one of the teams had never been to state before,” Osgood said. Teams prepared cases on this year’s topic, alternative energy in the U.S. Throughout the debate season, teams prepared their own cases, but because it was state competition, may teams across the state prepared new cases, so LHS debaters didn’t know what kind of cases they were going up against. “It was kind of like the 15 prior weeks didn’t mean a lot in terms of what learning what everybody was running,” she said.
