To say Monday’s game with Harmon was a tune-up for the rest of the Louisburg Girls Basketball Tournament might be a little misleading.

Louisburg didn’t need much of a tune-up against Harmon. In fact, the Wildcats just put it on cruise control and coasted to a 66-17 win over the Hawks and will meet Belton (Mo.) today in the semifinals of the tournament.

Wildcat coach Terry Tinich had a little trouble figuring out what to say at halftime after his team was up 43-0 at the break. Yes, that is right, 43-0.

“There is not much you can say in a game like this,” Tinich said. “We came out and played well and the girls did some nice things. We could have done a little better in some areas in the second half, but now we just have to get ready for Belton.”

Belton has stopped Louisburg (8-2) from winning its home tournament the last two seasons and the Wildcats hope to sink the Pirates’ ship this time around.

“The girls will be ready for that one, no doubt about it,” Tinich said. “We have lost to them two years in a row now and we hope to get our second tournament win of the season.”

Although Tinich played his regulars for most of the first half, it was junior varsity that saw a lot of time in the second. In fact, he started those players in the third quarter.

Tinich subbed his players in and out in shifts the entire game and 14 different players took the floor for the Wildcats. In the first quarter alone, eight different players scored.

“We didn’t have a player over eight points at halftime,” Tinich said. “Not everyone was able to score, but it was good to see those JV girls out there and see them have success because we are trying to build our program for the future.”

One part of the future, sophomore Emily Lemke, led all scorers with 11 points and was one of 12 different players to score. Senior Genna Stambaugh finished with nine points and junior Taylor Brown added eight.

In other tournament action, Belton downed Osawatomie 56-47 and Harrisonville (Mo.) defeated Maranatha 39-25. St. James Academy easily breezed past Turner 47-14 to complete Monday’s action.

Tournament play resumes at 6 p.m. today and will continue Saturday.
