Sports - Louisburg

The only thing more up and down than the stock market these days is the Louisburg boys’ basketball team.

The Wildcats have been on the highest of highs with buzzer-beater finishes and a couple of upsets here and there. They have also been on the lowest of lows with blowout losses to Gardner-Edgerton, Bishop Ward and a close loss to Anderson County.

Ups and downs are going to come with any inexperienced team, and Louisburg is no exception. I think most of us knew it was going to take time for those players to get accustomed to what coach Jim Dillon was asking for, but I don’t think anyone knew when it would start to come together.

Friday and Saturday might have been the time where it all clicked.

In victories over Metro Academy and Spring Hill last weekend at the Spring Hill Invitational, the Wildcats looked a little different. They looked more like a team, and they played the part.

There was no sense of frustration on the Louisburg bench. The defense was stifling at times, which helped them on the offensive end.

Is this the point of the season where Louisburg turns the corner?

The thing is, I am not sure, and I don’t even know if the team knows for sure. There are several positive signs pointing toward the Wildcats right now, but is this just one of the peaks and valleys of the season?

It might take a few games to find out, but Friday’s homecoming game with Ottawa might go a long way in answering that. Before venturing out on a three-game road trip, a win for the Wildcats on Friday would be huge for their confidence, and it could take them a long way in the postseason.

For all the struggles Louisburg has faced this season, the Wildcats still have a leg up in the substate.
Louisburg, which travels to Ottawa for substate play in late February, is currently (record-wise) one of the best teams who will be there.

If the season ended today, Ottawa and Louisburg would be tied for the No. 1 seed at the tournament, and that is why Friday’s game is so big. The Wildcats are in prime position to earn a spot in the state tourney — believe it or not.

Fort Scott (6-4), Osawatomie (4-5), Paola (5-7), Prairie View (4-7),  Anderson County (3-7) and Iola (1-9) all trail Louisburg as far as records go at substate.

Even with all the hardships this season, the Wildcats have it all laid out for the taking. Right now, it is all about winning games, and a win Friday could go a long way.
