Most of the department’s officers completed training Jan. 18 allowing them to carry a Taser X26 electronic control device. In November, the Louisburg City Council approved the purchase of four Tasers, allowing officers an additional method of nonlethal control over combative subjects. “The Taser can be deployed as an intermediate weapon as a nonlethal weapon system,” Sgt. Bill Smith said. Chief Ron Anderson said the Tasers will primarily be used for self defense. The Louisburg Police Department’s use policy states the Tasers can be used for self-defense, as an alternate to deadly force and to protect the officer and the public. “Our training and policy coincides with the Sheriff’s Office policy,” Anderson said. “Since we work together, we employ the same Tasers and have the same training. With that, we should have the knowledge of what they will do in a situation, and they would know the same when they assist us.” When used, the X26 has a red laser so the officer can ensure accuracy, and the unit shoots out two probes that emit electricity for five seconds per activation, rendering the subject temporarily unable to fight back. “If we’d had them in the past, we wouldn’t have an officer on light duty after suffering injuries in a scuffle,” Anderson said.
