Area high school seniors and college freshmen or sophomores majoring in journalism, political science or communications may apply for college scholarships from the Kansas County Clerks’ and Elected Officials’ Association. Because of the joint efforts of Kansas county clerks, the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office and Voters News Service, the scholarship committee will award 10 $500 scholarships. Scholarship winners’ names will be announced at the County Clerks’ and Election Officials’ Association seminar in May. The county clerk from each winner’s county will present that recipient’s scholarship during an awards assembly at his or her school. Applications may be picked up at the school counselors’ offices or at the Miami County Clerk’s Office, 201 S. Pearl St., Paola, and must be returned to that office or mailed to Inge Luntsford, 130 N. Spruce St., Kingman, KS 67068 by April 3. The funds from the scholarships are made available through the effort put forth by local election officials and supervising judges of the State of Kansas. Each is asked to call a toll free telephone number and report to the Voters News Service on specified races in the general election. The Voters News Service collects and tabulates a single, accurate set of election returns for broadcast and publication throughout the United States and abroad for the Associated Press, CBS News, ABC News, NBC News and United Press International.
