Dozens of members of the Louisburg High School FFA proved they’re at the top of their game last week, as the group traveled to Burlington High School to participate in the East Central District FFA Winter Career Development Events.

Competing against 22 other chapters that make up the East Central District, the LHS FFA members competed in events designed so students perform skills a professional in that field would be carrying out.

In the Ag Business Management event, members of the team took a test and solved problems related to running a business. Knowledge of accounting, record-keeping, economics, commodities trading and tax laws were necessary to succeed. Students also were expected to fill out net worth and income statements, inventories and do enterprise budgets.

The B team of Matt Collette, Brad Castle, Jamie Atkinson, Josh Konrade and Kyle Christianson placed first. The A team placed second, with Ali McKiearnan placing third and Jamison Parkhill placing sixth.

In the Dairy Products event, students were required to identify different cheeses, taste milk samples for defects, identify problems with milker units and distinguish between real and artificial dairy products. Students also took an exam covering the dairy industry, milk marketing and the processing of dairy foods.

The A team placed fourth and the B team placed seventh.

Students who participated in the Poultry event were expected to grade the interior quality of eggs, evaluate chicken patties and carton eggs, grade and identify chicken parts, evaluate production hens and boiler breeders and take a test covering the poultry industry.

The A team placed third and the B team placed first with Tanner Hutson placing first and Christina Davey placing fourth.

“I am really proud of the fact that the Poultry team was in the top three,” FFA adviser Jim Morgan said. “This is a group of freshmen competing against FFA members from other schools who have been doing this for two or three years.”

In January, the Ag Sales team competed in similar events, in which they selected an agricultural product and developed a sales presentation to present to a judge, who acted as a prospective buyer. By using the customer-oriented sales model, students attempted to complete the sale. In a second area, students worked to resolve customer complaints presented by the judges. Students also took an exam over advertising, sales and marketing.

The team of Lindsey Ward, Stephanie Sutherland, Ali McKiearnan, Stevie Gibson, Cole Davis and Carolyn Harris placed first, with Harris placing first and McKiearnan placing second.

Morgan said he is pleased with the results the LHS FFA teams brought back to Louisburg.

“Having all these teams place near the top is a testament to their ability to take classroom instruction and apply it in a competitive event,” Morgan said.
