While elementary students were focusing their attention on jumping rope to raise money for the American Heart Association the past two weeks, Louisburg Middle School students focused on shooting some hoops.

The school participated in Hoops for Heart for the first time this year, raising money for AHA while having fun.

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders spent their gym class periods Thursday and Friday rotating between five stations all focusing on basketball.

Physical education teacher Jeff Lohse said some students opted to raise money as part of their participation. The school’s goal for the first year was $4,000, and Lohse estimated Friday afternoon that students raised a little more than $3,000 in their efforts. But final totals reached Monday show the students raised $4,106.

“With the economy the way it is, we didn’t know what to expect,” Lohse said.

Top fund-raisers were Tyler Olson in sixth grade with $500; Nicole Hopkins in seventh grade with $205; and Chelsea Peuser in eighth grade with $80.

The student in each grade who raised the most money won the opportunity to be P.E. teacher for a day, while the top class in each grade gets to choose their activity for one day of class.

“All the kids were excited. They enjoy it,” Lohse said.
