Last week was a good one for the Louisburg girls’ junior varsity basketball team, at least until its final game.

The Wildcats met rival Paola in the championship game of the Eudora Invitational on Saturday, a team they had already beaten for a championship just a couple weeks earlier. But this time, the Panthers tamed the Wildcats with a 37-31 win after Louisburg defeated Baldwin 43-37 in the four-team tournament.

“The loss is extremely disappointing because I wanted the girls to come out of there with another championship,” Louisburg coach Jarrod Worthington said. “These kids flat-out work their tails off every day in practice and in the games.”

Emily Lemke did a bulk of the scoring for Louisburg with a team-high 14 points, while Carlie Houchen and Madison Wertz each added five.

Against Baldwin, Lemke did much of the same. The Louisburg sophomore scored 15 points, while Jordan Crow added nine and Kylie Geiman finished with seven. The Wildcats held a two-point lead at halftime, before outscoring the Bulldogs 15-7 in the third quarter. Louisburg needed it because it didn’t make a field goal in the fourth quarter.

“It was a good thing we were able to get some separation in the third quarter because we almost ran out of gas in the fourth,” Worthington said. “Baldwin cut it to one with two minutes left, but the girls took care of the basketball and converted at the free- throw line.”

Two days earlier, the Wildcats made their first trip to Eudora for a regular season game and won 41-33. Marisa Mackey and Crow each finished with eight points to lead Louisburg.

On Feb. 3, Louisburg defeated De Soto going away, 48-22. Geiman and Lemke each scored eight points to lead Louisburg and they were just two of 14 different players to score in the contest.

The Wildcats are now 10-2 on the season.
