The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. might delay construction of the proposed $250-million intermodal rail yard in Gardner because of a decline in intermodal volumes.

Gardner Mayor Carol Lehman received a letter Feb. 12 from J. Vann Cunningham, BNSF vice president of economic development, saying the railroad continues its commitment to this intermodal project but is considering an extension of the construction schedule.

“Unfortunately, BNSF is not exempt from the unprecedented and difficult economic conditions now affecting both the U.S. and global economies,” Cunningham wrote. “Specifically, the decline in our intermodal volumes has caused us to consider an extension of our proposed construction schedule, which has to be variable based on market demand.

“While we cannot provide additional specifics at this time, we will continue to keep you apprised of our plans and certainly appreciate your continued support,” he wrote.

The intermodal rail yard, a facility with electric cranes to unload freight from trains and a logistics park with warehouses where goods would be sorted and loaded onto trucks, had been scheduled to open in 2010.
Last fall, the Gardner City Council approved the annexation of 1,003 acres of land for the facility south of U.S. Highway 56 and north of 191st Street, with about 83 acres to the northeast of 183rd and Waverly Road.
