Senior night is supposed to be one of those times where memories are re-lived and more are made.

Louisburg is certainly not going to want to relive any of the memories from its final regular season game against De Soto. The Wildcat boys had trouble from the opening tip and lost their fourth-straight game, 67-30.

The 30 points was the lowest output for Louisburg on the season — not exactly the way the Wildcats wanted to enter substate play.

Louisburg faced off with Anderson County in the first round of substate Monday, and a full story will be in Friday’s Miami County Weekend.

“At this point in the season, you always expect your guys to come out and give great effort,” Louisburg coach Jim Dillon said. “With a young team, sometimes they equate great effort with making shots and from there it snowballed on us.”

Seniors Ryan Dvorak, Patrick Dixon, Drew Kershner and the injured Kyle Nauman all said goodbye to the home crowd, but they wish they could have done it on better terms.

The Wildcats (9-11) shot just 23 percent from the field, and De Soto was relentless on defense. De Soto held Louisburg to just 16 first-half points and forced several turnovers.

Louisburg didn’t have many people step up and score, as junior Justin O’Brien led the way with just six points. Starter Garrett Griffin and reserve Ashton Dover finished with five apiece.

“I would be wrong in not giving DeSoto credit for their performance,” Dillon said. “They dominated the paint, they hit outside shots and did a great job defending. We shot 23 percent from the field and DeSoto’s defense had a lot to do with that. When we did get open looks, we did not convert.”

On the other hand, De Soto had three players in double figures. Jamal Townsend led the Wildcats with 18 points and the three De Soto players in double figures outscored the Wildcats 38-30 by themselves.

Louisburg entered the opening round of substate Monday as the No. 4 seed hosting No. 5 Anderson County. The Bulldogs ousted the Wildcats in December during the Baldwin Tournament, but the Wildcats overtook the Bulldogs on Monday.

Now, they will meet the winner of No. 1 Ottawa and No. 8 Iola on Thursday in Ottawa.

“Unfortunately, the only way to get over a performance like that is to forget about it and move on,” Dillon said. “Good thing we have a game (Monday).”
