The Louisburg junior varsity boys’ basketball team seemed to be playing its best basketball of the season and it saved its best performance for last. Although its final game turned out to be a 60-58 loss to De Soto at home Friday, the Wildcats played well on both ends of the floor. Louisburg was coming off a 51-38 win over St. James Academy on Feb. 24 at home, and coach Aaron Webb saw his team get better from week to week. “Our last game of the season I think we played our best all-around game against a very good opponent,” Webb said. “Zach (Hildreth) and Ross (Dvorak) controlled the inside, and our perimeter players did a good job feeding them the ball.” The Wildcats had four players in double figures in the loss. Hildreth scored a team-high 18 points and Dvorak added 12 on the inside. Guards Clayton Houchen and Ashton Dover finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Eric Rhodes added five points. Against St. James, the Wildcats played well again, but this time came out with a win. Hildreth led Louisburg again with 15 points and Houchen added 13. Daniel O’Connell and Rhodes scored seven and six points, respectively, to round out the Wildcat top scorers. Louisburg finished the season with a 12-6 record, and Webb can already see there is a bright future ahead for the Wildcat program. “After 30 years in coaching, I can honestly say this has been one of my favorite teams to coach,” he said. “Each day, these boys came to practice and worked hard to get better, even those who knew they would not get much playing time. During the games these kids cared more about winning than they did their own personal stats and always put the team first.”
