Miami County Commissioners reacted with shock during their March 18 study session when Road and Bridge Director J.R. McMahon told them one of his employees had been battered that morning in what appeared to be an unusual case of road rage.

McMahon said a grader operator had reported being punched by a motorist around 10 a.m. that day, while he was doing road work near the Johnson County line.

On Monday, Miami County Undersheriff Mark Schmidt said no suspect had been identified.

Schmidt described the man as a white male, about 165 to 170 pounds. The vehicle was described as a Ford pickup truck, possibly blue.

McMahon said he was told the man ran over a pile of gravel created while the grader operator was doing road work and then climbed onto the grader and confronted the operator, telling him that the grader had damaged his vehicle.

“The victim was grading the road, and an unknown person got up on the cab of the grader and accused him of scratching his vehicle,” Schmidt said. “At this time, he struck the victim on the side of the head. ”

Road and Bridge department employees have since met in a special safety session in which they were told not to open the grader doors — in the future — far enough for anyone to gain physical access to them.

“This is the third time, over the years, that we’ve had an incident like that,” he said.
