Athletic policies regarding cutting and advertising are still up in the air after Monday night, as Louisburg USD 416 Board of Education members indicated they need more information before they can make a decision about either issue.

Activities Director Doug Key presented information to the board about a potential cut policy for middle school and high school athletics that would allow the schools to manage the number of players per coach and ensure players who are practicing every week see playing time.

“We are getting to a point where a lot of our league schools are going to it, and we don’t have enough opportunity for kids to play,” Key said.

He cited instances where there are 30 students on a middle school B team and nearly 50 students out for high school baseball this year.

“It’s awfully hard to put 50 kids on one field,” Key said.

Board members have discussed the issue before, but Monday was the first time they saw hard numbers of what a cut policy would look like, such as 20 players per grade in basketball at the middle school level.

Key got a lukewarm reception to the idea, with board members indicating they would like to give as many students the opportunity to participate as possible.

“Being part of that team is the thing that causes them to get there every day,” board member John Cleek said regarding some students who are content to simply be part of the team.

Board members also questioned whether the Louisburg Area Recreation Association would be willing to sponsor an older league for players who could be cut from Louisburg teams, and Key said he’s received indication that if the district provides space to practice, LARA is interested in providing a recreational basketball league for seventh and eighth-graders.

Newly-elected board member Connie Ewy, who was in the audience, asked what more the board needs to make a decision about the cut policy, and board President Jimmy Allen said more information is needed, he’d like to seek out public input on the topic and wanted the full board to be in attendance when it comes to a vote, as Lou Davis was absent Monday night.

The issue was continued until the May meeting.

Key also presented information regarding advertising banners that could be hung at sporting events.

Superintendent Rick Doll cautioned the board about approaching Louisburg businesses with another advertising/fund-raising opportunity.

“I’ve got quite a few complaints from businesses saying, ‘Leave us alone.’”
