Simply judging by the numbers, Louisburg High School’s blood drive was a success.

Sponsored by the LHS Leo Club and STAR Warriors, students 16 and older, staff and community members were invited to give up 15 minutes of their time, and a pint of blood, to save someone’s life Monday.

And by the end of the evening, the number of units collected had surpassed the two groups’ goals.

Student organizer Jenna Eggleston said the clubs were hoping to collect 67 units of blood, and with 85 donors signed up, that number seemed reachable.

Staff members from Kansas City, Mo.-based Community Blood Center reported that 84 people tried to donate, and 70 units of blood were collected in the  drive.

Eggleston said a majority of those who signed up were high school students, but a few community members pledged to donate, too.

On Monday morning, senior Kayleigh Kohlenberg was stretched out on a chair with her arm elongated as medical staff assisted with the process.

This year was the second time she donated blood to help others.

“The first time, it scared me, but it doesn’t bother me now,” she said.

As the hours wound down, community members, students and staff funneled in and out of the school’s auxiliary gymnasium, each leaving knowing they helped someone in need.

“I know it’s a good cause,” Kohlenberg said.
