The Louisburg City Council meeting provided some verbal fireworks Monday evening as new Mayor Curt Schreckengaust came under fire from council member Glena Windisch and planning commission member Corrina Hauer-Sullivan for some remarks he made during his election campaign that ranged from the city’s debt to the water plant to Cracker Barrel.

The new mayor also garnered criticism for imposing a two-minute time limit on people wishing to address the council.

The city did conduct some business during the meeting, including passage of an automatic car wash dryer on Metcalf Road, amid protests from neighboring residents.

But most of the meeting centered on scrutinizing the mayor’s remarks to this paper and to others during the campaign.

It was a hotly contested race, with Shreckengaust unseating former Mayor Arlen Thompson. So it’s natural for hard feelings to surface on both sides of the campaign.

Mayor Thompson accepted his election defeat very graciously and thanked supporters and colleagues who helped him make positive changes that will benefit the community for decades to come. He was a good mayor.

But Thompson has said he’s ready to move on.

Now, for the good of the city, the council and new mayor need to put aside any hard feelings that were aired and duly noted Monday night and get back to the business of serving the people.

Matt Goben: ...
It is not often that I agree with what is printed in newspapers. Much of the major media these days is about as biased as can be. However, in this case, I completely and whole-heartedly agree. I should also note that in the few cases when I do agree with a newspaper, most of those times it has been the Louisburg Herald.
