Powder puff game not for faint of heart PDF Print E-mail

Powder-puff football is usually a game where junior and senior girls from a high school or college get together to play either flag or touch football. The proceeds from the game go to a good cause, and it usually presents an entertaining time.

Friday’s game in Louisburg provided just that. The Wildcat junior and senior girls squared off for bragging rights, and while some of those girls were friends before the start of the game, during the game it was all business.
The seniors were the heavy favorite going into the contest, and for good reason. Last season, the then-juniors had their way with the senior class, and they expected nothing different this season.

They were bigger, stronger and more experienced. The juniors had speed on their side, but would it be enough to overtake the seniors?

Ummmmm …  nope. In fact, not even close.

The seniors dominated in the 28-0 blowout of the junior class that stood no chance after the opening possession. The juniors had a hard time stopping the senior running attack that included, in my opinion, MVP Sarah Abu-Ali.
Nobody could bring down the senior fullback after she busted off big run after big run. On defense, the linebacker was all over the field as well and came up with several big stops.

Friday’s affair was supposed to be a flag football contest, but at times it turned out to be just as physical as those on Friday nights in the fall. Players left the game hurt, there were cheap shots during and after the plays and name-calling.

It actually sounds like a great reality show to me.

Anyway, there was no doubt things were getting heated between the two classes, but the coaches on each side were trying to calm them down. Senior coaches Chad Renner, Kyle Nauman and Cody Larson headed the winning group and kept them focused the entire time.

Although junior coaches Ashton Dover, Kody Darrington (aka Wayne Whiting) and Drew Harding tried their best to control the group, there was just too much to overcome. There was no stopping the seniors, but a few tried.

Junior Jaclyn “Cookie” Abrahamian was her team’s enforcer. The Cookie Monster let the seniors know she was out there with shots on senior quarterback Morgan Mackey and a couple more on senior running backs.

After it was all done, however, all the girls lined up and shook hands and quickly resumed the friendships they had stopped for about two hours. Even though the juniors emptied their bench at the end of the game to try and get at least one score, everyone was all smiles afterward.

And why not?

The money that was raised went to the Louisburg Student Council scholarship fund and could provide one of those girls money in the future to attend college.

I can’t wait for next year’s rendition.
