We’ve never been big into presents for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries, no Easter baskets for the kids on Easter and nothing special for Mother’s or Father’s days. Until this year. What have those kids been up to, I wondered? Kinsey always has grand ideas, and I’m typically the grand idea shooter downer. This time it looks like she got her grand idea in play before I could be a wet blanket. Sunday afternoon she helped me plant some geraniums I bought when I was visiting Mom the day before. Kinsey had lots of fun and was full of ideas about what we could do next. Unfortunately, her ideas are usually bigger than either my time or my wallet! Her ideas just grew when we took a walk around the lake later that afternoon and peeked into the backyards of the many homes bordering the walking trail. Later that evening she fired up the old computer and started doing some shopping. Soon she hollered at me and said she’d found the perfect thing for our front yard. Our home’s former owners had a bird bath in the front yard and had even poured a circle of concrete for the bath to sit on. Kinsey found a bird spa and planter on the Wal-Mart Web site that she thought would look perfect in the yard. So Monday, Kinsey and her boyfriend, Austin, had earned a skip day from school for scoring well on their recent assessment tests and Kinsey convinced Austin that I needed a really cool Mother’s Day present. When she shared her idea with him, he remembered an old bird bath his dad was going to get rid of. They decided to recycle it in our yard. They hauled the bath to our house and got it all set up. But it was missing the planter Kinsey admired on the Wal-Mart bird bath. So off they went to buy some flowers and mulch to plant at the base of the bath. It still didn’t look quite right to Kinsey, so they found a miniature gazing ball to put in the middle of the bird bath. The kids were pretty pleased with themselves. But I didn’t know how pleased until I went into Price Chopper later than evening. As I was checking out, Linda, one of my favorite checkers, asked me how I liked my Mother’s Day present. One of the sackers overheard and said it looked really cool. It seems Austin, who works at Price Chopper, had been showing off my Mother’s day present with the picture he took on his cell phone. When I looked outside later that evening as it was getting dusk, I realized the gazing ball is solar and glows in the dark. The whole bird bath looks really nice both during the day and at night. Our family may have to rethink this whole present thing. I could get used to such thoughtful Mother’s Day presents.
