Louisburg Middle School’s sixth-grade choir made a special trip last week to Topeka to perform at the Kansas Museum of History.

Choir director Jason Sickel said he was invited to bring a choir to participate in the annual Day of Remembrance Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony sponsored by the state and the Kansas Holocaust Commemoration Committee.

“This year, I selected our sixth-grade choir to be the participating choral ensemble,” Sickel wrote in an e-mail. “The sixth-grade choir has worked very hard this year, and I have been pleased with their overall dedication, leadership and musical ability. I approached Mr. (Brian) Biermann about the idea, and he was very supportive. In fact, he even suggested that allow time for students to look around the museum.”

Students learned and memorized two pieces for their performance April 28.

The first piece, “Bashanah Haba’ah (Next Year),” was sung in Hebrew and English.

The second piece, “Inscription of Hope,” was meaningful because the text of the songs was taken from a cellar wall in Cologne, Germany, where Jews were hiding from the Nazis, Sickel said. “It is believed to have been written by a child,” he said.

The students traveled by bus from Louisburg to Topeka and ate lunch on the grounds of the museum.
Students then viewed the exhibits, including a train and a giant Native American tepee. There was also an Abraham Lincoln exhibit at which students could compare their own height to a life-size cutout of the president.

“It was an enjoyable day, and our students learned about Kansas history as well as the profound impact the Holocaust had on the world,” Sickel wrote.
