The rain poured. The ground was wet. And the wind was blowing.

But that didn’t stop the memories Monday morning at Louisburg Cemetery. Family members braved the raindrops to place flowers and memorials on graves, and residents stood — umbrellas in hand — to pay their respects during Louisburg’s annual Memorial Day services.

“The rain — this is a very small thing. Compared to what the men and women did for us, this is a very, very small thing,” resident Rick Summers said right before services began.

A few dozen people turned out for the 9 a.m. service — a portion of the number of people who normally attend, said Wayne Knop of the American Legion John P. Hand Post No. 250 of Louisburg.

“This was great,” he said. “We figured we’d be 90 percent down (in attendance). But this is about half.”

Memorial Day is an important day for members of the Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. It’s a day they can honor their fallen comrades and remember what they fought for during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Because of them, our lives are free. Because of them, our nation lives,” Knop said in his speech to the crowd of about 50.

Poppy Princess Brielle White, 5, in a lacy white dress, laid a wreath in memory of the veterans with the help of Rhonda Kerr.

Members of the Legion and VFW performed a 21-gun salute. Rudy Obermeier played “Taps” on his trumpet while veterans saluted the flag.

The group performed five more services throughout the Louisburg area — at Louisburg Catholic Cemetery, Glenwild Cemetery, Wea Cemetery, Aubry/Stilwell Cemetery and Bucyrus Cemetery.
