Hundreds of bicyclists will invade the area June 13 as the Bike Across Kansas tour ends its weeklong trek in Louisburg.

Riders will begin their day June 13 early in the morning in Paola, where the approximately 600 bicyclists will spend their evening.
Louisburg Chamber of Commerce Director Patsy Borter said organizers have indicated to her the riders will travel from Paola east on 311 Street and north on Metcalf Road, ending their trek at Broadmoor Elementary School, 105 S. Fifth St. East.
“A lot of them will just stop at Broadmoor, but then there will be some that continue on (Kansas Highway) 68 and stop at the state line and take pictures of each other,” Bortner said.

Bikers who choose to continue to the state line will return to Louisburg for an ending celebratory lunch.

Counting families and well-wishers, Bortner said there could be close to 1,000 visitors in Louisburg that morning.

“We’re glad they’re ending their ride here,” Bortner said. “I think it’s kind of a feather in our cap for them to choose Louisburg.”
Bortner said school clubs, civic organizations, churches and even small businesses are welcome to set up booths for bake sales, to sell trinkets, or even for informational purposes at Broadmoor. Riders will periodically end their journeys throughout the morning, and a booth could be the perfect opportunity to reach hundreds of people who are a captive audience.

Businesses should also expect a little more foot traffic that day, as some families and bicyclers may even stay around and enjoy everything Louisburg has to offer.

B.A.K. riders will begin their journey June 6 in Syracuse and travel through Garden City, Jetmore, Larned, St. John, Partridge, Halstead, El Dorado, Eureka, Chanute, Humboldt, Blue Mound and Paola before ending their journey 545 miles later in Louisburg,

“We try to find a town that has the facilities to accommodate 850 bike riders, so I think that may be part of the reason (B.A.K chose Louisburg to end),” said B.A.K. organizer John Weaver. “We ended the 25th B.A.K. in Louisburg in 1999, and I think because this is our 35th year, another major anniversary for the event, it just fit.”
