Louisburg native Vicki Cutshaw-Reddell and her family have been fighting an uphill battle in recent months.

She has been diagnosed with brain cancer, which has spread to 65 percent of her right parietal lobe. Her husband, Bill, now has to deal with medical expenses after getting laid off from his job in Gardner as a press operator for Stouse, Inc, and he lost his health insurance.

“The biggest thing I have to deal with is getting laid off,” Bill said. “That’s where the panic came from.”
Before he was laid off from his main job, he took up part-time jobs to deal with the medical expenses. He said his friends have been helping him out.

“If the job market doesn’t get better soon, we’re going to have to make some tough decisions,” Bill said.

Chemotherapy treatments are about $2,800 every month, and magnetic resonance imaging scans are $8,000 every other month. Vicki has been unable to work since a seizure occurred July 31. Bill said the family is dealing with social security issues and has been denied disability. He said that he received information that the family makes too much money on unemployment to qualify for Medicare or Medicaid from the state.

“The doctors said she was making progress,” Bill said. “We’re trying to finish up on chemotherapy.”

A fund-raiser is being held from 5 p.m. until closing time Saturday, at The Hide OUT, 109 N Frank St., Spring Hill, where Bill works.

A live auction, silent auction and raffle is on the agenda for the fund-raiser. Some of the items donated so far include a $100 gift certificate from King Limo, MP3 player, free haircuts and autographed Johnny Dare T-shirt. Bill said they are still looking for more donations. The R.Red band is also scheduled to perform at the June fund-raiser.

“We’re looking for something that’s going to hold value in an auction,” he said.

On a Facebook page, he said 98.9 FM KQRC did a hand up segment for him last October.

The Reddells have lived in Spring Hill for 20 years, but Vicki is a 1981 graduate of Louisburg High School. They have two sons that attend schools in the Spring Hill school district. Vicki was involved with her children’s activities. She worked at Hillcrest Bank as an account representative.
